In Basic Sampling II: Mapping and Vegetation Ecology, students learn how to operate a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) device. Students also learn terrestrial monitoring techniques from environmental experts on soil and vegetation ecology.

- Learn about GPS unit setup, menus, and additional options.
- Understand how to find, track, and mark waypoints.
- Recognize the importance of knowing different coordinate systems.
- Learn purchasing considerations when buying a GPS unit.
- Know best management practices for GPS and mapping.
- Understand maps and how to use compasses.
- Define ecosystems.
- Develop a firm understanding of BEC (biogeoclimatic classification) zones.

- Understand an EM's duties when monitoring terrestrial environments.
