EM 06 - Basic Sampling II - Mapping and Vegetation Ecology

In Basic Sampling II: Mapping and Vegetation Ecology, students learn how to operate a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) device. Students also learn terrestrial monitoring techniques from environmental experts on soil and vegetation ecology.

Learning Outcomes

  • Know GPS: what it is, where it comes from, and how it works.
  • Learn about GPS unit setup, menus, and additional options.
  • Understand how to find, track, and mark waypoints.
  • Recognize the importance of knowing different coordinate systems.
  • Learn purchasing considerations when buying a GPS unit.
  • Know best management practices for GPS and mapping.
  • Understand maps and how to use compasses.
  • Define ecosystems.
  • Develop a firm understanding of BEC (biogeoclimatic classification) zones.
  • Define plants.
  • Understand soils.
  • Understand an EM's duties when monitoring terrestrial environments.

Requirements: PC is Recommended for better user experience. Mac is also supported. Browser Edge is NOT fully supported.
